Welcome to the 2010-11 Winter Season

Hello Broomballers!

The draft has been completed and the winter 2011 season of DC Broomball is a week away.  The ball officially drops on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, when four teams comprised of over 50 broomballers take the ice.

The captains met Monday for the draft and the resulting teams are below. If your captain has not yet reached out to your team, you can find your teammates and team color below.  If your name does NOT appear on the rosters below but you registered to play in the Winter 2011 season, please contact us ASAP at DCBroomball@gmail.com to get everything straightened out.

Your captain either has or will be contacting you shortly to appoint assistant captains and to discuss positions, lines and most importantly, team name, so keep an eye out for a note from them.

Attached, you’ll find the official league rules, schedule and rosters as PDFs. Directions to the rink are also included below.  You can also access the schedule, results, and standings at dcsocialsports.com/leagues/broomball/197.  Please take a minute before Wednesday to review the league rules.  This is imperative if everyone is going to hit the ground running when the season officially starts.  For the first week, we’d also ask that you arrive to the rink early to meet your team.

Just some quick notes:

• Refs: Our games will be refereed by one paid official who will be joined each week by a veteran player/ref who will assist primarily as a lines judge and to provide
support.  In the rules, you’ll notice that only captains and assistant captains may discuss calls with refs, but we will take that a step further and ask everyone to be
respectful and considerate of the refs and your fellow league-mates who do a VERY difficult job week after week.

• Schedule: The schedule is attached.  We’ve worked hard to ensure that all teams get a fair share of both early and late games.  Two players who are not playing in
any given game have been assigned to work that game’s shot clock and score sheet.  Using league members for this duty keeps our costs down, and it’s actually quite easy and fun work that involves watching broomball and making the rink horn go off (always a good time).  If you’ve been assigned to run the shot clock or score sheet and cannot for any reason perform that duty, please find a replacement for yourself, or switch dates with someone.  If you have any questions about keeping score or running the clock, please find Ryan Schradin, James Cargo or Sarah Schradin prior to your assigned game and they will walk you through it.

• Rides: If you do not have a car and need a ride to the rink, please reach out to your team captain who will work to put you together with an individual from your team who can provide transportation. If that fails, reach out to us at DCBroomball@gmail.com, and we’ll work to find someone on another team or a representative from the Commissioner’s office that can give you a lift.

• Shirts: Last year we gave out league t-shirts as part of the cost for registration.  We decided to drop that this season and instead direct those funds towards a referee and to keep our overall registration fees low.  If you don’t have a DC Broomball shirt in your team color, simply wear your team color to the rink each week (Red team wears red, etc.). Please try to select shirts that are clearly your team color to avoid confusion.

Thank you all for registering for the winter 2011 season of DC Broomball. We’re dedicated to becoming one of the preeminent broomball leagues in the country and are extremely thankful that you’ve decided to join us for the ride.

See you all on the ice next Wednesday!

Broomball forever,

Recap of Semifinals and Championship Preview

Hello DC Broomballers!

Last week we saw some pretty exciting and very different playoff games. It was a solid first round and the two remaining teams now get to duke it out for broomball supremacy.

We’ve got two captains chasing their first Commissioner’s Cup championship squaring off this week in the big dance. No matter who wins, someone new is claiming the Cup!

Here are some highlights from the first week of the playoffs, the schedules for the second week of the playoffs and any other various things we think of.

Week 1 Playoff Results
The early game saw the Frank’s Bar All Stars face off against a Urine Trouble team that had beaten them in overtime in the last week of the regular season. This one wouldn’t end up as close, as the All-Stars donned all black to intimidate their enemies and came out fired up.

The All-Stars were firing on all cylinders, and kept going to the man who got them there, Luke LaViolet, to provide scoring opportunities. Luke didn’t disappoint, netting five goals. Dan Pall and Dan St. John would add a goal apiece to bring the All-Stars goal total up to seven on the night.

Urine Trouble seemed awestruck and struggled to get the ball out of their zone. They surrendered 21 shots on goal and only managed to take seven of their own. Two of those seven found the back of the net, one from the returning Pat Leonard and the second from Dave Bloom.

K2, Matt Merighi and Sarah Desilets had assists for the All-Stars. Jason “Speedy” Williams had an assist for Urine Trouble.
Final score: (Frank’s Bar All-Stars: 7, Urine Trouble: 2)

The second playoff game saw the Blue Bananas of Death looking to put away Cargo Pants for a second week in a row. This was a different affair altogether as the teams were locked in a tight, close battle until the final buzzer.

Les Pantalons took a rare early lead when Luke Streng scored in the first half on a pass from John Slawinski, and held onto the 1-0 advantage for most of the game.  On a late power play, trailing by a a goal and facing elimination, the Blue Bananas pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.  George MacDougall tallied on the empty net with a long shot from the neutral zone scoring what would turn out to be the decisive goal.  The Bananas then answered with a goal from Kasey Kirby assisted by Tripp MacDonald to pull back within one.  It was a tense battle for the final seconds as Blue tried to tie things up still playing 6 on 5, but the Cargo Pants held on to win the game and advance.

The Pants' goalie, Sean Greeney, stopped 16 of 17 shots, and Ellen Turner stopped 10 of 11 shots for the Blue Bananas.
Final score: (Cargo Pants: 2, Blue Bananas of Death: 1)

Playoff Week 2 Schedule
Here’s the schedule for the second week of the playoffs, with ref and scorekeeper assignments.

End of Season Party
Just a reminder, the end of season party for the fall 2010 season will be 8PM on November 19, 2010 at First Down Sports Bar.

Unlike previous years, the league will be purchasing TWO KEGS, so folks who get there early will enjoy FREE BEER until the kegs are kicked. Just like previous end of season parties, there will be revelry, fun, drinking, eating, chatting and of course, MVP awards and the presentation of the Commissioner’s Cup to the league champions!

Winter Season Registration
Also a reminder…there’s only 4 teams and 56 slots available for the winter season. We’ve already filled over a third of them. Register early and talk it up to your friends soon or you may get locked out! Here’s the link to sign up:

Summing Up
I usually write something pseudo-funny here…but I’m going to use this space to thank each and every one of you for making this a great, hard-fought season of DC Broomball. We had memorable moments, close games and we’ll definitely have a captain getting their name on the cup for the first time ever when it’s all said and done.

Please come out to the end of season party. We know the new Harry Potter movie comes out the same day…and we’re sorry. Seriously though…this party is always a good time and it’s great fun to see the winning team receive and proceed to do stupid things with the cup. Also…there’s free beer. Now that’s a price point we can all be happy with.

Also…the winter season registration closes in less than two weeks. Please stop sitting on your hands and register if you haven’t. If you have concerns about the winter season, let us know. We’re always happy to work around issues whether they be schedule, financial or otherwise.

As always, please feel free to contact the commissioner at any time with any complaints, questions or abuse at dcbroomball@gmail.com.

Playoffs This Week

Hello DC Broomballers!

Well, that’s it for the regular season. Six weeks of hard-fought contests and now a whole new season starts! That’s right, it’s playoff time.

Here are some highlights from the last week of the regular season, the schedules for the first week of the playoffs and any other various things we think of.

Week 6 Highlights
The early game between Cargo Pants and the Blue Bananas of Death was a defensive and goaltending battle, with both teams putting up close to the same amount of shots through two periods, but nobody really able to dent the armor.

John Crick managed the only goal in the game with an assist from Louis Gardner. Cargo Pants goalie, Sean Greeney, stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced, while Blue Banana goalie, Ellen Turner, stopped all 16 that were put on her net.
Final score: (Blue Bananas of Death: 1, Cargo Pants: 0)

The second game of the week saw the league’s first place team square off with the last place team, as the Frank’s Bar All-Stars met Urine Trouble in yet another defensive battle.

The All-Stars opened scoring when Chris Matroniano unloaded a blast from the face-off dot that beat the Commish. After that, goaltenders Max and Ryan put on a show until Mike Pawlo scored on a wicked one-timer from Dave Bloom.

The game would go into overtime despite a late regulation flurry of offense from the All-Stars. Seconds after the start of bonus broomball, Dave Bloom got a pass from Bradford Miles Neumann and shot the ball into the empty All-Star net from just inside the zone to give Urine Trouble the win.
Final score: (Urine Trouble: 2, Frank’s Bar All-Stars: 1 in OT)

Standings
At the end of the regular season, the standings are:

Frank’s Bar All-Stars (W:3, T:2, L:1, P:8 GD:+5)
Blue Bananas of Death (W:4, T:0, L:2, P:8, GD:-2)
Cargo Pants (W:3, T:0, L:2, P:6, GD:-3)
Urine Trouble (W:2, T:0, L:4, P:4, GD:0)

Summing Up
This has been another great season of DC Broomball. It’s amazing how much the standings have changed from week to week, which is a great indication that we’ve had some hard-fought contests between some very even squads.

All of that doesn’t really matter now, though. The playoffs are here and every game is “win or go home.”

Which teams will take the first step towards claiming the Commissioner’s Cup and having their names engraved on its shiny silver exterior forever? Will it be The Frank’s Bar All-Stars and Cargo Pants, who are looking to get revenge on the teams that bested them last week? Or will it be Urine Trouble and the Blue Bananas of Death continuing their dominance over the opposition? We find out this week when the ball drops on the fall 2010 playoffs!

Week 5 Recap and Week 6 Preview

Hello DC Broomballers!

Wow…this is the last week of the regular season. After this week, things get amped up as the teams battle it out for the Commissioner’s Cup! If you’ve never seen our trophy…it’s pretty cool. Oh, and the winners get their names engraved on it!

Here are some highlights from week five, the schedules for week six and any other various things we think of.

Week 5 Highlights
The early game between Cargo Pants and Frank’s Bar All-Stars pitted the teams with the top two records against each other in broomball combat. Cargo Pants had won the first meeting between these titans in overtime, and the All-Stars were looking for revenge.

Luke LaViolet had two goals and an assist and Sarah Schradin, playing in her first game back after her terrible accident, registered a goal and an assist for the All-Stars. That was all the All-Stars would need as their goaltender, Max Leitschuh, shut the door by stopping all eight shots he faced.
Final score: (Frank’s Bar All-Stars: 3, Cargo Pants: 0)

The second game of the week saw the Blue Bananas of Death face off with Urine Trouble. The Blue Bananas were looking to avenge a blow-out loss to Urine Trouble earlier in the season.

This game was back and forth all the way. Bradford Miles Neumann scored two for Urine Trouble and Dave Bloom added another. Jason “Speedy” Williams and Mike Pawlo were given assists for the yellow team.

It wasn’t enough as the Blue Bananas answered back with two goals and an assist from Aaron Hopkins and a goal apiece from Kasey Kirby and rental player Tony Pappas, who also each had an assist. John Remein was credited with an assist for the blue team as well.
Final score: (Blue Bananas of Death: 4, Urine Trouble: 3)

Standings
At the end of week 5, the standings are:

Frank’s Bar All-Stars (W:3, T:1, L:1, P:7 GD:+6)
Cargo Pants (W:3, T:0, L:2, P:6, GD:-2)
Blue Bananas of Death (W:3, T:0, L:2, P:6, GD:-3)
Urine Trouble (W:1, T:0, L:4, P:2, GD:-1)

Week 6 Schedule
Here’s the schedule for week 6, with ref and scorekeeper assignments.

Game 1 (9:30PM):
Home: Blue Team (Captain: John Crick)

Away: Red Team (Captain: James Cargo)

Score/Clock: Bryan Egan / Michael Pawlo

Summing Up
Only one week left before things get REAL! Remember, every team makes the playoffs…and it’s a whole new season when the ball drops!

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves! This week, we see the first place team, Frank’s Bar All-Stars square off with the last place Urine Trouble squad, battling to save face and enter the playoffs on a positive note. We also see the number two and three teams fighting it out. The Bananas handed Cargo Pants a tough loss earlier in the season…will Cargo Pants answer with a win of their own? We’ll find out this week!

Week 4 Recap and Week 5 Preview

Hello DC Broomballers!

It’s hard to believe that the season is half over already! Four weeks are in the books and it’s been a fun and interesting ride.

Here are some highlights from week four, the schedules for week five and any other various things we think of.

Week 4 Highlights
The early game between Cargo Pants and Urine Trouble was a slobber-knocker of a defensive battle with no scoring for either team until the second period.

Mike Pawlo managed to score the first goal of the game for Urine Trouble early in the second. The yellow team looked like they might make the lead stand-up, but later in the period James Cargo slammed home a loose ball in front to even the score.

In the closing seconds of regulation, with overtime looming on the horizon, Jamie Frantz unloaded a blast from the point. The ball deflected off of Urine Trouble goaltender, Ryan Schradin, and carried into the top corner of the goal to give Cargo Pants the lead and, eventually, the win. Dave Bloom had an assist on Urine Trouble’s goal, and Luke Streng assisted on James Cargo’s goal for Cargo Pants.
Final score: (Cargo Pants: 2, Urine Trouble: 1)

The second game of the week saw the Blue Bananas of Death face off with the Frank’s Bar All-Stars. The Bananas and All-Stars ended the first period knotted up at a goal apiece thanks to goals from John Remein of the Bananas and Luke LaViolet of the All-Stars.

The second period was also a closely contested battle, with Kasey Kirby twice beating All-Star goalie Max Leitschuh and All-Star Dan Pall tallying once. Penalties killed the All-Stars in the second as they were fighting to come back short-handed, but ended up falling to the Bananas by one goal.
Final score: (Blue Bananas of Death: 3, Frank’s Bar All-Stars: 2)

Standings
At the end of week 4, the standings are:

Cargo Pants (W:3, T:0, L:1, P:6, GD:+1)
Frank’s Bar All-Stars (W:2, T:1, L:1, P:5 GD:+3)
Blue Bananas of Death (W:2, T:0, L:2, P:4, GD:-4)
Urine Trouble (W:1, T:0, L:3, P:2, GD:+0)

Week 5 Schedule
Here’s the schedule for week 5, with ref and scorekeeper assignments.

Game 1 (9:30PM):
Home: Green Team (Captain: Sarah Schradin)
Away: Red Team (Captain: James Cargo)
Score/Clock: Kyle Lohrke / Ellen Turner
Ref: Bradford Miles Neumann

Game 2 (10:30PM):
Home: Blue Team (Captain: John Crick)
Away: Yellow Team (Captain: Dave Zarneke)
Score/Clock: John Slawinski / Lucas Streng
Ref: Sarah Schradin

End of Season Party
Just a reminder, the end of season party for the fall 2010 season will be 8PM on November 19, 2010 at First Down Sports Bar. Unlike previous years, the league will be purchasing a keg or two, so folks who get there early will enjoy FREE BEER until the keg is kicked.

Just like previous end of season parties, there will be revelry, fun, drinking, eating, chatting and of course, the presentation of the Commissioner’s Cup to the league champions!

Summing Up
DC Broomball continues to see impressive parity this season. The top slot in the standings has changed hands twice this season already, and the Bananas have come back from a hard start to hang up a few W’s on the top teams in the league. Not unlike the NFL…we have no idea what’s going to happen on any given Wednesday!

This week, the Bananas look to run their unbeaten streak to three straight in a game against Urine Trouble. In the early game, the All-Stars look to wrestle the #1 slot back from a feisty Cargo Pants squad. Who will win? Only one way to find out!
